Obituary

Mr. John Thomas Alden, age 70 of Portland, TN died Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Mr. Alden was born February 10, 1950 in Jackson, MS the son of the late John and Joyce Alden.  

Mr. Alden is survived by his daughter, Jasmine Nelson (Tim) of Portland, TN. A sister, Judith Manning of Mt. Juliet, TN along with three grandchildren Caden Nelson, Jocie Nelson and Taylin “Lexi” Nelson.

Mr. Alden attended both Portland Church of Christ and Generation Church in Portland. He worked for Kirby Building Systems for the past 40 years and for the Portland City Parks and Recreation since 1983. John graduated from Donelson High School in Nashville, TN and graduated from Belmont University with a degree in history. He was a substitute teacher in Portland for 10 years, officiated high school soccer for 15 years, and umpired or refereed every sport offered by the parks and recreation department. John also worked for the Baptist Sunday School Board for several years.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 15, 2021 at Gilbert Funeral Home in Portland, TN. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday and from 9:00 AM until service time Friday at Gilbert Funeral Home.
